4/11/2023 0 Comments Squirrel Rifle InlaysCalibers were generally on the small side with around 40 probably being the most common. Still mostly maple but with ash and walnut making their presence known. The money was put into the lock and the barrel, where it means the most. That isn't to say they were cheap rifles. Most often just two ramrod thimbles, no ramrod entry pipe, no nose cap, mostly without a butt plate, just a heel and toe plate of iron, horn, antler, whatever might be available and most of all, inexpensive. Unadorned, mostly sans patch box with often just a grease hole and just as often nothing at all to perform the function of a patch box. What makes them Southern Mountain, their development in the scheme of longrifle history in the southern states, common characteristics and differences. With cj posting up that pic of his Southern Mountain rifle and continuing to tease me with it I got to thinking about those rifles and their history.
